Silica gel in sachets

What is silica gel?

Silica gel sachets are a desiccant used to protect against moisture and preserve technological and/or manufactured products that are sensitive to atmospheric agents and contained inside the packaging. Thanks to its high absorbent power, silica gel desiccant is able to absorb moisture, lowering the dew point inside the packaging during transport and thus allowing the product to maintain its original characteristics.

Silica gel sachets can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in H2O.

It is a chemical substance with a crystalline appearance, porous, inert, non-toxic and odorless, with a molecular chemical formula SiO2 nH2 O, insoluble in water or any other solvent, chemically stable, it only reacts with hydrofluoric acid and alkali.

Thanks to its unique chemical composition and physical structure, silica gel/silicagel It has characteristics incomparable with other similar materials, for example high absorption, stable thermal performance, stable physical property, relatively high mechanical strength, etc…

How is silica gel made?

Treatment of sodium silicate with hydrochloric acid results in silicic acid, from which the water is then removed. This causes the acid to polymerize and form spherical aggregates.

The spheres increase in size and form a condensate gel on their surface. The gel then undergoes a drying process, during which it shrinks and becomes a firm hydrogel, which is washed away. It is then heated to 248 degrees Fahrenheit (120 C).

After a few hours, the hydrogel turns into a hard xerogel, which is ground into silica gel particles. Depending on what size is required, if necessary, the particles can be sieved for size. Its porosity and surface area are controlled by the conditions that lead to initial gel formation and how the hydrogel is washed.
