What happens if my child swallows silica gel?

Is Silica Gel toxic when ingested?

Is silica gel desiccant toxic? It is non-toxic, tasteless and non-polluting. It is chemically stable; it hardly reacts with anything. Silica gel desiccant is the only FDA-approved desiccant that can come into direct contact with food and medicine.

But we usually see the text “do not eat” on the package. What if we eat the silica gel desiccant? Don’t worry, it is safe. If you or your children swallowed the silica gel desiccant, don’t worry!

Silica gel is non-toxic, cannot be digested by the intestine, and can ultimately be expelled from the body.

While the contents of a silica gel packet are basically harmless, it would be a rather unpleasant experience to try to consume the silica gel crystals. That is why we print “do not eat”, “dangerous” or “throw away”, because it is not food, if you swallowed too much, you may choke, so we suggest you take care of your children. When you open the packet containing it, store it or throw it away immediately.
