What are ethylene sachets and what are they used for?

Ethylene absorbent

What is ethylene?

Ethylene is a gas invisible to the human eye that is produced naturally by climacteric fruits and vegetables as part of their metabolism. Climacteric fruits are those that continue to ripen even after being harvested.

Ethylene plays a double role, as on the one hand it is emitted by the fruits, and on the other hand it is also responsible for their ripening as the ethylene concentration increases.

What is ethylene absorbent?

Ethylene absorbent is a preservative that serves to delay ripening and prolong the shelf life of vegetables and fresh products. Thanks to its high absorbent power, silica gel desiccant is able to absorb moisture, lowering the dew point inside the packaging during transport and thus allowing the product to maintain its original characteristics.

Silica gel can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in H2O.

It is a chemical substance with a crystalline appearance, porous, inert, non-toxic and odorless, with a molecular chemical formula SiO2 nH2 O, insoluble in water or any other solvent, chemically stable, it only reacts with hydrofluoric acid and alkali.

Thanks to its unique chemical composition and physical structure, silica gel/silicagel It has characteristics incomparable with other similar materials, for example high absorption, stable thermal performance, stable physical property, relatively high mechanical strength, etc…

Depending on the diameter of the pore, the silica gel/silicagel as fine-porous or macro-porous, each of them with a different absorption capacity depending on the relative humidity, Therefore, the choice of type must be adjusted according to the conditions of use.

What presentations does ethylene absorbent come in?

Silica gel comes in different presentations. Thus, it can be used for different purposes. The ideal amount of silica gel for each product will depend on the size of the packaging of our product, the material, the time we want to protect it, the relative humidity at the time of packaging, the hygroscopic characteristics of the packaging, etc.

The most common commercial presentations of silica gel are:

  • 0.5 grs
  • 1 gr.
  • 2 grs.
  • 3 grs.
  • 5 grs.
  • 10 grs.
  • 15 grs.
  • 20 grs.
  • 50 grs.
  • 100 grs.
  • 200 grs.
  • 500grs.
  • 1,000 grs.
  • 25 kgs.
  • 1,000 kgs.

If you want to know which is the best way to protect your product with silica gel, contact us and one of our engineers will help you.

What fabric are the ethylene absorbent envelopes made of?

The silica gel bag is made of different materials, depending on the industry where the product will be applied, directly impacting the cost.

Kraft paper

  1. Resistencia y firmeza: Baja
  2. Higiénico: Strength and firmness:
  3. Transpirable: Baja traspirabilidad.
  4. Reusable: It is not considered reusable but it is environmentally friendly as it is 100% recyclable.
  5. Price. Low

Aiwa fabric

  1. Resistencia y firmeza: Medium due to the network of fibers they are made of.
  2. Higiénico: Recommended for industrial applications only.
  3. Transpirable: Permeable, a prueba de humedad, permite que pase la humedad hacia el interior.
  4. reuseable: Yeah.
  5. Price. Half

NonWoven

  1. Resistencia y firmeza: High due to the network of fibers it is composed of.
  2. Higiénic: It is a very hygienic material that forms a barrier against bacteria.
  3. Breathable: Its fibers give it the characteristic of being breathable.
  4. reuseable: This type of material is ideal because it allows the bags to have a very long life, that is, they are reusable. Therefore, bags made of this material are environmentally friendly.
  5. Price. Half

Tyvek

  1. Strength and firmness: Due to its chemical-mechanical manufacture, it is flexible and resistant to tears, punctures, water, UV radiation and chemicals..
  2. Higiénic: FDA approved for food contact and sterile applications.
  3. Transpirable: Sus fibras le otorgan la característica de ser transpirable hacia el interior. Pero impermeable hacia el exterior. puede soportar temperaturas entre -75 °C y +118 °C.
  4. resuable: Its high resistance and firmness allows it to be used for a long time without suffering any deterioration. It can be reused and is 100% recyclable.
  5. Price. Alto.

All these materials are easily printable, so the product can be personalized.
